What is a Dental Hygienist?

added on: March 6, 2018

You may have heard about dental hygienists, but what exactly do they do?

At Jenkins & LeBlanc, our registered dental hygienists are an essential part of our professional dental team.

Their specialized training, state licensing, and education from accredited schools allow them to be excellent educators in oral health treatment and prevention for your child.

Dental hygienists work both independently and alongside our board-certified pediatric dentists to take x-rays, remove soft and hard deposits, apply dental sealants, and provide customized oral hygiene instruction and care.

Education Reqirements

Dental hygienists receive their education through technical colleges, dental schools, universities, or community colleges.

Most of these programs take at least two years to complete, resulting in an associate degree. Many university-based dental hygiene programs may offer baccalaureate or master’s degrees which require at least two years additional schooling as well as clinical practice.

Upon receiving their degree, dental hygienists take licensure examinations as well as obtaining a passing score on the National Board Dental Hygiene Examination.

How Does a Dental Hygienist Help Your Child?

Their extensive skills and experience allow us to provide excellent oral health care for your child. They are available to answer questions and educate your child on the importance of good oral hygiene, too!

In addition to being experts in your child’s oral health, our hygienist team is personable, caring, and fun!

Our hygienists create a warm and welcoming environment that is comforting to your child and builds a solid foundation of trust.

If your child is fearful or has special health care needs, please let us know and we will work together to ensure a positive experience.
